Q & A with Dave Dyson

Where was your first improv class?
East Bay Improv Beginning class, spring of 1996, with Linda Patterson. I was looking for something fun to get me
out of the house. I'd never had any theater or improv training before that. I'd been taking
painting classes, but they weren't very social, so I was looking for something more fun.

What theatrical/performance training and do you have and from where?
East Bay Improv (1996-2001) - Linda Patterson
Bay Area Theatresports (1999-present) -  Keith Johnstone, Gerri Lawlor, Carole Hazenfield, Paul Killam,
Regina Saisi,   Barbara Scott,  William Hall, Diane Rachel, Dan O’Connor, Rich Ross, Rafe Chase, Kasey Klemm,
Laura Derry, Dave Dennison,  Letitia Bartlett, Nan Crawford, Zoe Galvez, possibly others...
Loose Moose International Improv Summer School (2001) -   Dennis Cahill, Shawn Kinley, Betty Poulsen, Keith
Johnstone
Private Improv classes with Derek Cochran & Carole Hazenfield
Stage Combat classes with Christopher Morrison
Theatrical Clown and LeCoq-based Mask training with Leslie Felbain (2003-2004)

Who are/were your performance inspirations?
Monty Python inspired me to be silly as a kid, but I could only be that way around my friends. As an adult, I've
been inspired by my teachers and fellow performers I've worked with and learned from.

What companies have you worked with?
Improv: East Bay Improv, BATS Improv Student Group, The Fibbs (co-founder), The Un-Scripted Theater Company
Scripted Theatre: Impact Theatre, Three Wise Monkeys, Thunderbird Theatre

What do you do performance related besides improv?
I act in a couple plays a year, the occasional short or indie film, and I've been in a few TV commercials. I also do
some voice-over work and write, and I've worked the Renaissance Faire and Dickens Fair as an entertainer.

What’s so great about improv?
The skills that are most important in improv -- listening, supporting your partners onstage, embracing ideas, the
whole teamwork thing -- are skills that not only serve well in other creative arenas, but in life offstage as well.

Favorite parts you’ve played?
Kung-Fu Guy in "Action Movie: The Play", O.T., the lovable town drunk in "Money & Run", Jesus in "Better Than
Hitler"

Any good life-changing improv stories?
Well, improv sure changed my life -- it led to all the other creative endeavors that I'm now pursuing, and to my
quitting the old day job and trying the creative life. I love what I'm doing.

Any improv words of wisdom?
Yes-and. Listen. Support each other.

If you were a superhero who would it be?
My favorite superhero growing up was Spider-Man -- a nerd with super powers, a clownish sense of humor,
vulnerable enough to identify with but tough enough to be a heavy hitter too.

Favorite quotation?
"With great power comes great responsibility" -- Ben Parker (Peter Parker, aka Spiderman's uncle)
